What is ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator)?

In layman’s term it’s a big brother of pacemaker. Where it can give a shock internally when required. It is implanted in patients with survival of cardiac arrest or evidence of ventricular arrthymia or as a secondary prevention where possibility of ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation which is a life threatening condition.

It functions as both pacemaker + ICD.

It can be a single or dual chamber (2 leads) depending on the requirement of the patient.

What is CRT / CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with or without Defibrillator)?

It can be called as a father of pacemaker. It is implanted in patients with LBBB on ECG with severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction, where Right and Left Ventricles are not contracting (Pumping the Blood) in a synchronized fashion.

It has inbuild pacemaker plus a defibrillator as well which takes care of low heart rate as well as associated ventricular arrythmia.

Now a days all these devices including Pacemaker, ICD & CRT-D are MRI compatible.

All the formalities and precautions are as per the permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI).

Leads in CRTD

  • Lead 1- Atrial Lead
  • Lead 2- Right Ventricular lead
  • Lead 3- Left Ventricular lead
